My
plane was due to depart Gatwick at a very reasonable 14.25, meaning I was able
to leisurely have breakfast and pack my bags. Richard and Sharon kindly drove
me to Gatwick a few hours before I was due to depart. I thought Gatwick was a
really nice airport – reasonably sized and with a good selection of restaurants
and cafés to hang out in. The first leg was Gatwick to Dubai and passed without
issue. I spent most of the time writing. The meal, lamb with rice, was very probably
one of the best aeroplane meals I’ve had. We arrived in Dubai at about 2am
local time, with two hours to transfer to my next flight. Though 2am sounds
bad, by UK time it was still the early evening. I spent the whole 2 hours
transferring from one flight to another and was only able to sit for about 5
minutes prior to boarding. One can see how easy it would be to miss a
connecting flight if there was any sort of delay. The second flight to Adelaide
was quite long and I spent some more time writing, watching TV and sleeping. The
plane arrived back in Adelaide at 8.50pm local time and after about 40 minutes
of passing through customs and collecting baggage, I walked out to be reunited
with my mum, Patsy and Philip.
