Day 21, Tuesday 3/4:

We awoke to find that Riga was covered in a fresh blanket of snow.
With our sights set firmly on Estonia, my ¼ homeland, we set off into the squally weather. It was not long before we reached the border and the requisite photos were taken.
We continued on northwest, towards the ferry terminal for Saremaa Island. Saremaa is Estonia’s largest island, approximately half the size of Kangaroo Island with some 40,000 inhabitants. The sea had actually frozen for some way offshore from the mainland, forming what are called ice rocks. By late afternoon we reached our destination in the small rural village of Kihelkonna. Our accommodation was in a parish lodging house located in the grounds of the church, consisting of rooms with single beds and a shared kitchen. While making dinner later on we met two other guests who were staying. They were two other Estonian workmen who unfortunately didn’t speak any language other than Russian.
